Executive Chairman, Virage Logic Chairman, ON Semiconductor Director, Actel and Cypress Semiconductor
J. Daniel McCranie serves as Virage Logic's Executive Chairman where he is responsible for leading the company's demand creation efforts, merger and acquisition activities, and strategic direction. He joined Virage Logic as Chairman of the Board in August 2003, became Executive Chairman in March 2006, and served in that role until taking over as president and CEO in January 2007. From January 2007 until October 2008, he served as president and CEO, and in October 2008, he again became Executive Chairman.
McCranie also currently serves as Chairman of the Board for ON Semiconductor, a provider of power and data management semiconductors and standard semiconductor components. He also holds directorships at Actel, a supplier of innovative programmable logic solutions, and Cypress Semiconductor, a world leader in timing technology solutions.
McCranie is a 30+ year veteran of the semiconductor and communications industries. Prior to joining Virage Logic, he served as vice president of sales and marketing of Cypress Semiconductor, a San Jose-based manufacturer of semiconductors for the communications industry. He retired from that position in 2001.
From 1986 to 1993, McCranie was the chairman, president and CEO of SEEQ Technology, a supplier of mixed-signal data communications products. Leading up to his tenure at SEEQ, McCranie held positions of increasing responsibility in management, engineering, and sales and marketing at Harris Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices, American Microsystems and Philips Corporation.
McCranie earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Michael L. Hackworth
Chairman, Former President and CEO, Cirrus Logic Inc.
Michael L. Hackworth has served as a Director of Virage Logic since March 2000 and as a Director of Epicor Software Corporate since late 2007. Since 1997, he has also served as Chairman of the Board of Cirrus Logic, a supplier of analog circuits and advanced mixed-signal chip solutions. He served as Cirrus Logic's President and Chief Executive Officer from January 1985 to June 1998, and continued to serve as its Chief Executive Officer until February 1999. Mr. Hackworth holds a B.S. in Engineering from University of Santa Clara.
Dr. Shubat co-founded Virage Logic in 1996 and currently serves as the company's president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Prior to taking on the role of president and CEO in October 2008, Dr. Shubat served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) where he led the company's strategic initiative to always be first-to-market with next generation products by focusing on both organic and in-organic product line expansion and operational excellence. Prior to his role as COO, Dr. Shubat served as the company's vice president of research and development (R&D) and chief technical officer (CTO) where he was instrumental in leading the nearly 300 person technical staff to conceive, develop and deliver the highly differentiated advanced technology solutions for which Virage Logic has become known.
Prior to co-founding Virage Logic in 1996, Dr. Shubat served as director of engineering at Waferscale Integration, a provider of Programmable uC peripherals (subsequently sold to ST). During his 10 year career at Waferscale Integration, he managed various groups including design, application-specific integrated circuit and high-speed memory.
Dr. Shubat holds more than 20 patents and has contributed to more than 25 publications. He holds an executive M.B.A. from Stanford University, a B.S. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University.
Robert H. Smith

Mr. Smith joined the board in August 2003 bringing to Virage Logic over forty years of experience in financial management with leading technology companies. From 1963 at the onset of his career at Honeywell, Inc. Smith has held a number of executive positions in operations, finance and administration with Memorex Corporation and Control Data Corporation. In 1982, Smith joined R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company (NYSE: DNY), a leading provider of financial printing and communications as executive vice president, finance and chief financial officer. Smith went on to become president of Maxwell Graphics in 1986. In 1996, Smith joined Novellus Systems, Inc., as executive vice president, finance and administration and chief financial officer. Smith also served on the board of directors of Novellus until his retirement in 2002. Since 1990, Smith has been a member of the board of directors of Cirrus Logic, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRUS), serves on the company's compensation committee, and also serves as chairman of the audit committee. In 2003, Smith joined the board of directors of PLX Technology (NASDAQ: PLXT), a provider of high-speed connectivity equipment in the semiconductor industry and Epicor Software Corporation (NASDAQ: EPIC).
Michael Stark has served as a Director since December 1999. Since December 1998, Mr. Stark has served as Managing Director of Crosslink Capital, Inc., a San Francisco-based venture capital firm. From 1992 to December 1998, he was a Managing Director of Crosslink Capital, which was a business unit of Robertson Stephens. From 1989 to 1992 he was Director of Research at Robertson Stephens. From 1983 to 1989, Mr. Stark was a senior research analyst with Robertson Stephens, covering the semiconductor industry. Before joining Robertson Stephens in 1983, he worked in Intel's strategic planning group. He serves on the board of directors of several private companies. Mr. Stark holds a B.S. in Engineering from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
Cathal Phelan joined Virage Logic's board of directors in March 2006. In September 2008, Phelan became the Chief Technical Officer of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. Cypress is focused on delivering high performance mixed-signal programmable solutions and providing customers with rapid time-to-market and exceptional system value. For the three years prior to Cypress, Phelan was Chief Executive Officer and President at Ubicom, Inc., a leading provider of wireless communication processors and software platforms targeted for the media over the home network market.
Before joining Ubicom, Phelan spent nearly 15 years at Cypress Semiconductor in various management and engineering roles, including five years as GM/EVP of the Personal Communications Divisions focused on USB and Wireless USB. Prior to his tenure at Cypress, Phelan spent six years at the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where he worked in the Advanced Memory Design Center on innovative memory architecture and design. Phelan currently holds 37 U.S. patents.
Phelan graduated from the Engineering School of Trinity College at the University of Dublin in Ireland. He received a BAI (1st class) (BSEE equivalent in the U.S.), a bachelors degree in mathematics and a masters degree in micro-electronic engineering (MSEE equivalent in the U.S.).
