Chairman and CEO, Virage Logic Chairman, ON Semiconductor Director, Actel and Cypress Semiconductor
J. Daniel McCranie serves as Virage Logic's CEO and Chairman. He joined Virage Logic as Chairman of the Board in August 2003, became Executive Chairman in March 2006, and served in that role until taking over as CEO in January 2007. In March 2008, he again became Chairman of the Board. He also currently serves as Chairman of the Board for ON Semiconductor, a provider of power and data management semiconductors and standard semiconductor components. He also holds directorships at Actel, a supplier of innovative programmable logic solutions, and Cypress Semiconductor, a world leader in timing technology solutions.
McCranie is a 30+ year veteran of the semiconductor and communications industries. Prior to joining Virage Logic, he served as vice president of sales and marketing of Cypress Semiconductor, a San Jose-based manufacturer of semiconductors for the communications industry. He retired from that position in 2001.
From 1986 to 1993, McCranie was the chairman, president and CEO of SEEQ Technology, a supplier of mixed-signal data communications products. Leading up to his tenure at SEEQ, McCranie held positions of increasing responsibility in management, engineering, and sales and marketing at Harris Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices, American Microsystems and Philips Corporation.
McCranie earned his bachelor's degree in electric engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Alexander Shubat Ph. D.
Chief Operating Officer
Dr. Shubat co-founded Virage Logic in January 1996 and currently serves as the company's Chief Operating Officer (COO). As COO, Dr. Shubat is responsible for leading the company's strategic growth initiatives and engineering operations. Prior to moving into the COO role in April 2008, Dr. Shubat served as the company's Vice President of R&D and Chief Technical Officer where he was instrumental in leading the nearly 300 person technical staff to consistently deliver first-to-market the highly differentiated advanced technology solutions Virage Logic has become known for.
Prior to founding Virage Logic, Dr. Shubat served as director of engineering at Waferscale Integration. During his 10 year career at Waferscale Integration, he managed various groups including design, application-specific integrated circuit and high-speed memory.
Dr. Shubat holds more than 20 patents and has contributed to more than 25 publications. He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University, and an executive M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Christine Russell
Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer
As Virage Logic's vice president of finance and chief financial officer (CFO), Christine Russell is responsible for leading all financial and administrative activities including corporate finance, administration, legal, and investor relations.
Russell brings more than 20 years of financial executive management experience in both emerging and larger technology firms in the Silicon Valley to Virage Logic. Most recently she served as CFO of OuterBay Technologies, a database archiving company, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in February 2006. Prior to that, Russell held CFO positions at Ceva, Inc., a digital signal processing IP company and Persistence Software, Inc., both NASDAQ listed companies. She successfully completed initial public offerings (IPOs) for Persistence Software and Valence Technology. She also served as CFO of Cygnus Solutions (sold to Red Hat), a provider of open source development tools and platforms for embedded technologies, and held CFO and senior financial positions at Valence Technology, Xerox and Measurex (Honeywell).
Russell currently serves as a director and chair of the Audit Committees for Peak International, Ltd. and QuickLogic Corporation. She is also a member of the University of Santa Clara Business School Advisory Board and a past president of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Financial Executives International and served as a member of the FEI National Ethics and Eligibility Committee. Russell holds bachelors and masters of business administration degrees in Finance from the University of Santa Clara.
Brani Buric
Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategic Foundry Relationships
As Virage Logic's Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategic Foundry Relationships, Brani Buric is responsible for driving the company's product strategy as well as developing and managing the company's strategic foundry relationships to further establish Virage Logic as the semiconductor industry's trusted IP partner. Prior to his current role, Buric served as Senior Director of Strategic Business Solutions where he was responsible for helping the Sales organization develop strategic business opportunities. Prior to that, Buric served as the company's Senior Director of Business Development and IP Platform Marketing where he was responsible for leading the company's strategic partnership programs and defining the company's semiconductor IP platform strategy.
Prior to joining Virage Logic in May 2002 as a result of the acquisition of In-Chip Systems Incorporated, Buric served as In-Chip Systems' Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. Prior to joining In-Chip Systems in 2000, Buric held senior management positions in marketing, business development and applications engineering with Sycon Design, Avant!, Meta Software, Mentor Graphics and Silicon Complier Systems. Before moving into the EDA industry with Silicon Compiler Systems in 1987, Buric held engineering and product management positions with Burroughs.
Buric holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade.
Daniel LaBouve
Vice President, Operations
As Virage Logic's Vice President of Operations, LaBouve is responsible for leading the company's global operations strategy. His proven track record in creating sustainable and scalable engineering operations product development environments spans more than 20 years and includes experience in leading multi-functional and multi-site teams developing emerging and industry-leading technology products.
Prior to joining Virage Logic in July 2008, LaBouve served as Vice President of Engineering for Innovative Silicon (Santa Clara, CA) with responsibility for multi-site engineering operations for an emerging floating-body memory technology start-up focused on embedded and standalone DRAM markets. Prior to that, LaBouve served as Vice President of Engineering for ARM's Physical IP Division where he directed multi-site engineering operations with an annual license revenue of more than $60 million and an organization of approximately 380 engineers. LaBouve also served as Senior Director of Engineering for Artisan Components and brings engineering experience from Mentor Graphics, NCR Corporation, and the Delco Electronics Division of General Motors.
LaBouve holds a B.S. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has also filed a number of patents for the purpose of improving integrated circuit design performance.
Kamalesh Ruparel
Vice President and General Manager, Application Specific IP Solutions and Silicon Technology
Kamalesh Ruparel brings more than 22 years of semi-custom integrated circuit (IC) ecosystem experience to his role as Virage Logic's Vice President and General Manager of Application Specific IP (ASIP) Solutions and Silicon Technology. In this role, Ruparel is responsible for driving the company's ASIP business (the company's functional IP product line established through the acquisition of Ingot Systems in August 2007) and the silicon validation of all Virage Logic products including test chip development, test chip characterization and silicon reports. Previously he spent approximately ten years at Cisco Systems, most recently serving as director of engineering for the ISBU ASIC-COT Engineering in the Datacenter, Security & Switching Technology Group. Ruparel's experience also includes management positions at Apple Computer and senior engineering positions at Vertex Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments. Ruparel holds a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an MS in computer science from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
David Sowards
Vice President of Non-Volatile Memory Products
David Sowards serves as Virage Logic's Vice President of Non-Volatile Memory Products. Prior to joining Virage Logic in July 2005, Sowards served as Vice President of Engineering for fabless Smart Card IC maker, Emosyn International, an SST company. Sowards joined Emosyn in 1998 where he established the design organization and developed products that grew to over 200 million units being shipped by mid 2005.
Prior to Emosyn, Sowards served as Director of Engineering at Information Storage Devices (ISD), a maker of devices for the audio market that used analog level storage on conventional floating gate non-volatile technology. Prior to ISD, Sowards held various engineering and management positions at Exar, Catalyst Semiconductor, Wafer Scale Integration, Xicor, and Sperry Univac.
Sowards holds a BSEE degree from the University of Utah.
Sherif Sweha
Vice President of Engineering
Sherif Sweha serves as Virage Logic's vice president of engineering responsible for the company's memory product development efforts including design excellence, delivery and engineering productivity. Sweha brings more than 20 years of Intel engineering management experience to Virage Logic. In his most recent assignment at Intel, Sweha served as director of non-volatile memory (NVM) design engineering for the $2 billion FLASH memory business. Responsible for the complete chip development process, he oversaw product architecture, chip design and validation, design automation and embedded software development. In addition, Sweha directed the design activities to develop test chips and lead vehicles for the 65-nanometer (nm) process node, as well as advanced alternative non-volatile memory technologies. He also grew a global design team from 175 to more than 400 engineers and established Intel's first chip design teams in the Philippines and China. Prior to joining Intel in 1984, Sweha spent two years at Texas Instruments as a non-volatile memory designer. Sherif holds 10 patents, has authored numerous technical papers on non-volatile memory and has written four papers on leadership in industry.
Yervant Zorian, Ph.D.
Vice President and Chief Scientist
Dr. Yervant Zorian has served as Virage Logic's Vice President and Chief Scientist since joining the company in 2000. Prior to that, Dr. Zorian served as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories and Chief Technical Advisor to LogicVision.
Dr. Zorian also serves as the Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society for Conferences and Tutorials and is the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of IEEE Design & Test of Computers. He founded and presently chairs the IEEE 1500 standardization working group for embedded core test, and has authored over 250 papers and four books. Dr. Zorian has received a number of best paper awards, is an honorary doctor of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, is a Fellow of the IEEE, and is the recipient of the 2005 IEEE Industrial Pioneer Award.
